Paused - China: End harassment of Chen Guangcheng's family and friends

Update 30 November - Chen's nephew sentenced
Chen's nephew, Chen Kegui, was sentenced today to three years and three months in prison. He was charged with 'inflicting intentional injury' after using a knife to defend himself when 20 individuals raided his house shortly after his uncle made his dramatic escape from house arrest. Chen Kegui has not been allowed to contact his family since his detention in late April, and he was denied access to a lawyer of his choice.

Following a dramatic escape from illegal house arrest, human rights defender Chen Guangcheng has left China with his family to take up a fellowship at New York University. We are relieved that Chen and his family are now in relative safety after seven years of harassment at the hands of the Chinese authorities.

But their ordeal is not over – members of Chen's wider family and the brave individuals who assisted his escape face serious reprisals and we are worried for their safety.
