Update, 24 June: As of 18 June, 104 of the detainees were officially recognised as being on hunger strike, with 44 of them being 'tube-fed'. We continue to monitor the situation.
We faxed the first batch of petition signatures to the White House ahead of President Obama's key speech on security on 23 May 2013. During the speech, he announced further steps towards closing Guantánamo,
including transferring detainees cleared for release. While we welcome
these commitments, the US authorities must turn them into action - we will use the tens of thousands of global petition signatures to keep up the pressure on them to do so.
This action is now closed. Please take our new action for Shaker Aamer, the last former British resident still held in Guantánamo
Since the hunger strike began, President Obama has broken his silence and promised to close Guantánamo, and the US Attorney General has spoken of ‘renewed efforts’ to close the camp.
